The Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheatre is a large ellipsoid arena built in the first century CE under the Roman emperors of the Flavian dynasty: Vespasian (69-79 A.D.), Titus (79-81A.D.) and Domitian (81-96 AD).The elliptical amphitheatre is still considered an engineering and architectural wonder and it remains, more then just a symbol of Imperial Rome, one of the most well known archaeological monuments on earth. The Colosseum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy. The amphitheatre is a type of construction invented by the Romans. In Greek, amphi means “around”. So, an amphitheatre is a theatre, where the spectators can sit around the arena .With our tour you will discover the arena which was used to host spectacular public entertainment events such as gladiator fights, wild animal hunts and public executions from 80 CE to 404 CE and were than more 50,000 people could be accommodated by the amphitheatre. They were seated according to rank, social class and gender. You will see Marvel at ancient stage machinery capable of amazing special effects, mechanical elevators centuries ahead of their time, and an incredibly complex system of underground links between various supporting buildings that made the Colosseum spectacles possible. These are amongst the ingenious inventions that you will have the opportunity to see during this tour. The Colosseum was used by the emperors to show off their power, wealth and to support their popularity. The show was usually held for more than one day and it included comical acts, displays of exotic animals and fights to the death between animals and gladiators or between gladiators. The Colosseum was occasionally the scene for public executions. The condemned person was killed in a way inspired by the mythology – eaten by beasts or burned to death. The fighters were slaves, condemned criminals, prisoners of war, free Romans and even Emperors. In fact, the only emperor to participate in this kind of fights was Commodus. He killed but was never killed because his opponents were under-armed, poorly skilled or existed from previous fights. If a gladiator was victorious in many fights he had the right to implode the emperor for his liberty. If his request was accepted, the gladiator was given a wooden sword, as a sign that he was a free man and would never have to fight again. During the medieval times, the Colosseum lost its greatness. It was abandoned and it became a fortress for the medieval clans of the city. The monument became even a source of building materials, but sometimes it was used as place of Christian worship.
