Our Vatican Museums plus Colosseum Private Tour with professional guide will lead you in the heart of Roman history and human civilization. The first step will be the Vatican Museums: only a part is open to the public, but it is surely enough to admire the greatest artists’ works of art, such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Pinturicchio and Fra Angelico. You will also visit the art gallery “Pinacoteca Vaticana” and the collection of Modern Religious Art. Then, you’ll focus on the Sistine Chapel, the official residence of the Pope in the Vatican City famous for its architecture and decorations painted by Renaissance artists including Michelangelo, Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Ghirlandaio and many others. In particular, between 1508 and 1512 A.D., Michelangelo painted 1,100 m² of the chapel ceiling . The ceiling, and especially The Last Judgment, are widely considered to be his masterpiece in painting. The work took four years to be completed and it represents a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God on all humanity. The four “Raphael’s Rooms“, famous for the frescoes painted by Raphael, are considered another masterpiece of the High Renaissance in Rome. They were originally intended as a suite of apartments for the popes. The next stop of our tour will be St. Peter’s Basilica where you will see other extraordinary works of Michelangelo as the famous Pity and the dome. Inside the basilica you’ll find many works from Bernini, for instance the Baldacchino, the bronze columned canopy over the high altar of St. Peter’s Basilica. Several mosaics and monuments dedicated to the popes will make you relive the whole history of the papacy and the development of the Roman Church. The beautiful St. Peter’s square has a deep symbolic value too: this is the place where the Saint, known as the chief apostle, was buried in 64 A.D.. Our tour will continue in the Gallery of Maps, a gallery containing a series of painted topographical maps of Italy based on drawings by friar and geographer Ignazio Danti. The panels represent all the Italian peninsula in frescoes, each painting a region as well as a perspective view of its most prominent city. After a break for lunch (not included), a professional guide will help you visiting the most important archeological areas of Rome such as the Colosseum. The Colosseum is considered as the symbol of the greatness of Rome all over the world, it was the vital center for the Romans and stadium of the historical battles of the gladiators. Known as the greatest amphitheater of the world, with a capacity of over 50.000 spectators, it is the image of whole Italy. You will continue with the Roman Forum, a series of monumental plazas built among the 46 B.C and the 113 A.D. The Roman Emperors wanted the Forum to be built in order to testify their power and greatness. From the Forum you’ll continue toward the place where everything began: the Palatine Hill. This hill, near the river, is a museum open to the public that can be visited during the day entering from St. Gregory Street or from the Imperial Forum. The Palatine hill represents the birth of Rome because here Romolo founded the city and it was the house of all the emperors. The last stop is Circus Maximus, the most ancient Roman chariot racing stadium for mass entertainment. It’s situated in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills and it can be considered as the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome. The tour end in the Circus Maximus archeological area.
