In this way you will have a thorough overview of all the city’s landmarks, from the picturesque squares to the most famous sights. In St Mark’s Square you will meet your tour guide and you will visit the St. Mark’s Basilica, no wonder Venetians called it “Basilica d’Oro”, the golden basilica – this tour includes your entrance ticket (Skip the Line Access) to the amazing panoramic view from the terrace! Saint Mark’s Basilica is a sanctuary that holds a great amount of treasures, both material and spiritual. Next to the Basilica there is The Doge’s Palace, Palazzo Ducale in italian. It was once the Republic’s venue, the palace of justice and the official residence of the doge and it is considered the most ambitious expression of Venetian Gothic architecture. For over 1000 years this palace housed 120 Doges (Dukes), so your tour guide will have plenty of facts, anecdotes and scary secrets to tell you. Your tour will continue on the Bridge of Sighs that connects the palace with the new prison. Enjoy the same, beautiful but yet sad view of Venice that the prisoners had for the last time when they were taken to their cells. Once finished the walking tour you have some free time to enjoy your lunch and then, your wonderful tour continue around the corner you find Rialto Bridge. The original bridge was made of wood, but it was replaced in 1588 with the current stone structure. The area around the bridge is where ships would unload their goods for the Venetian local markets. Today the bridge and the surrounding area are scattered with shops. The Rialto area was initially Venice’s city center, but overcrowding pushed all activities towards the sea in what today is the area of St Mark. In Rialto was the main market of the city, here oriental spices precious fabrics and metals and the most extravagant goods were always available. This area was characterized by a fascinating mix of people and cultures. Then you’ll visit Marco Polo’s house, the Venetian son who went to sea and came back with stories of China and an eastern world that few had ever seen or even heard of. You’ll see the squares of Campo SS Giovanni e Paolo and Campo Santa Maria Formosa, where you will find Byzantine influences, Renaissance buildings and modern structures, all of them showing the eclectic story of this unique city.
